Nakosso – The Niassa Business Centre

Nakosso, or the Niassa Business Centre, was created under a joint programme of the Government of Mozambique and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) for the support to the private sector in the Niassa Province. One of the goals of the programme is to contribute to the improvement of the business environment, in order to attract more investment and precipitate the development of this province.

Nakosso focus on giving,

Business Information Services, Legal Services, and Ombudsman Services.

Programa Malonda
In Niassa the private sector support program of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) is called Malonda. “Malonda” means business in a Niassa language. The Mozambican Government and Sida jointly finance the programme.

Niassa is still known as The Last True Wilderness. The province offers a growing variety of accommodations close to attractions such as the Lake Niassa, with its fine beaches, the Niassa Reserve with its unique fauna, etc. With a numerous governmental investments in infrastructure the province is getting more and more accessible which also brings along a lot of business opportunities for experienced and knowledgeable companies that are willing to invest.

Industry & Trade

The industry in Niassa is still very undeveloped and consists of small bakeries, potteries, craftworks, construction material, etc. Also the trade in the province is suffering from problems such as poor distribution network, lacking credits, etc. Though the number of markets are increasing and there are also a few organisations helping with the promotion of small industries and trade companies: Fundo de Apoio a Reabilitação da Economia (FARE), Programa de Desenvolvimento Agrário no Niassa (PDAN), Gabinete de Apoio a Pequena Indústria (GAPI) and AMODER-Malonda.

Agriculture, Farming and Forestry

At present 85 % of the total production in Niassa comes from agriculture, which also means most of the population is working within the area of agriculture. In general the farmers grow maize, beans, cotton, manioc (cassava), peanuts, tobacco, sunflower seeds, etc. Though the areas used for agriculture is increasing rapidly still enormous areas remain uncultivated.
