Lichinga

Lichinga, formerly known in the Portuguese colonial era as Vila Cabral, is the capital of Niassa Province. It is here that 75,000 of the Province's 756,000 inhabitants live.

Lichinga is also the main gateway to the Mozambican side of the lake.

The town is located at Lichinga plateau, which is part of the famous African 'The Rift Valley' that comprises Great African Lakes and the escarpment running from Djibouti to lake Niassa.

Lichinga, fringed by pine plantations, lies at an altitude of 1,277 m, offering a soothing breezy climate even in the hottest time of the year. Lichinga offers a variety of entertainment by active theatre and dance groups and, on most weekends, the cinema complex hosts concerts and beauty competitions.

Dona Argentina's restaurant Chambo has a long-time reputation for its extraordinary food and thus becomes a lively meeting point for tourists, as is Quinta Capricórnio. English-speaking guides are available to take you to the beach, forest, Chipandje Cetu wildlife conservation area, or anywhere else you may want to explore.
